A Surprise Engagement in the White Mountains
I woke up to a text that instantly made my heart race:
"Are you free to do a surprise engagement session in the White Mountains? If so, I’ll send over your information."
An engagement session in the Whites? Count me in.
I hadn’t met Trevor or Stephanie before this moment, which somehow made it even more exciting. I was suddenly part of a top-secret proposal plan in one of the most beautiful places! Trevor’s plan was thoughtful and perfectly adventurous: “We’ll be taking a trip up to northern New Hampshire for my birthday and I’ll suggest to Stephanie we should pull over and stretch our legs in the Whites at the Governor Gallen Bridge. You can pretend to photograph the landscape (great views of Mount Lafayette) when we show up!”
Brilliant.

The plan was to meet at 9am. When I arrived, I immediately had to climb over a massive wall of snow just to access the bridge, classic White Mountains winter. The air was crisp, the mountains were snowy, and everything felt still. As I walked along the bridge “scouting the landscape,” snowmobilers came roaring through, breaking the quiet morning calm. Turns out, Trevor and Stephanie would also be snowmobiling that weekend, which made the setting even more perfect for them.
Then I saw them. They appeared from behind a snow mound, bundled up against the cold. I quickly turned my back, lifting my camera toward Mount Lafayette as if I had absolutely no idea who they were. And truly...the view was distracting. These mountains are stunning. They hold so much memory for me, and still so much mystery. I’ve hiked many of these peaks myself, including the Appalachian Trail. There’s something sacred about this place. I always say if there is a place called Heaven, this would surely be it.
Then it happened. Stephanie stood looking out at the mountains, taking in the view. Behind her, Trevor quietly got down on one knee. She had no idea.
When she turned around, Trevor was there, ring in hand, eyes full of love. Shock. Joy. Tears. Laughter. She said yes. I started walking toward them, smiling and laughing, “Hi, I’m Carly. Congratulations!” And just like that, we were all sharing in this beautiful, intimate moment on a snowy bridge in the White Mountains.
Later, I learned Trevor and Stephanie are high school sweethearts. They’ve been together for eight years. Stephanie told me she knew this moment would come someday, she just didn’t expect it to be that weekend… and on Trevor’s birthday! As we wandered along the bridge taking photos, I joked, “Well, you’ll never forget your anniversary now!” We all laughed. Capturing their love was effortless. The way they looked at each other, the ease between them, it was clear this wasn’t just a surprise proposal. This was years of growing together, choosing each other, building a life side by side.
We parted ways and headed to our destinations just before a nor’easter storm swept through New England, perfect timing.
I drove away and felt grateful to have documented an important day in the story of Trevor and Stephanie.
