But every now and then, an artist pulls me out of that zone, captures my attention and that’s when I know they’re something special.
I first met Sage in December 2018, when he was opening for my friend and client Alex Tuohey at Alex’s record release show at Gateway City Arts in Holyoke, MA. The moment Sage stepped on stage and started singing, I found myself thinking, “Who the heck is that?!” Normally, when I’m photographing live shows, I’m so focused on getting the perfect shot that the music is more in background. But every now and then, an artist pulls me out of that zone, captures my attention and that’s when I know they’re something special. While Sage was performing a particular song, his stepdad leaned over and whispered, “This one’s my favorite.” The song was “Burning Room” and by the end of it, I was completely hooked.
Shortly after that night, Sage reached out to book a portrait session for his EP Chasing Virtue. We shot in downtown Stafford Springs, CT, not far from his hometown. That session marked the beginning of a creative partnership that has continued to grow over the years. In 2021, we linked up for another portrait session to promote his EP "Blossom". Since then, I’ve had the privilege of capturing Sage in action at live shows and shooting portraits for his various projects, including Sage King and Company, Hivebane, and Revelations: A Tribute to Chris Cornell.
Some of the venues I’ve photographed him at include Broad Brook Opera House in CT, MGM Springfield, Westfield River Brewing, and The Gold Room in Westfield, MA, where he played a solo acoustic storyteller set. Next up on the list, I hope to capture the band he sings in, Living Wreckage.
Now here we are in 2025, having just wrapped up another shoot for his newest record, "The Art of Goodbye". It's been such a blast watching Sage's musical journey evolve through various sounds and styles for so many years. Sage recently made the move to Nashville, and I’ve been loving seeing his journey unfold from afar. I’m looking forward to heading south soon to visit and to capture the next chapter of his story.
